Dear Info Seeker,

I’m going to be direct, the fact that you’re reading this tells me that you WANT Disabled Access to Food Service Establishments. So let’s get straight to the point, shall we? I have created a Web Site that lists food service establishments that cater to people with disabilities.

Our mission is to provide a single place where you can come to get the latest information on New York City Food Service Establishments that have facilities accessible to people with disabilities. We at Doors Wide Open recognize the need for a website like ours for New York City: in New York City today, there are over 800,000 people living with disabilities, and the City get’s around 50 million tourist every year according to the Disability N.Y.C. Network.

The Food Service Establishments that we list on the site are those that adhere to the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for full accessibility. The food service establishments that we feature are accessible to disabled people who utilize wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, motorized scooters, walkers, canes, and service animals.  Each of the establishments that we list have been identified as places that welcome those who choose not to let their disabilities hold them back!

The Food Service Establishments Listed:

At our Disabled Access Listing Site, we don’t just give out the names of a few restaurants, but we identify a full range of food service establishments that are compliant with, and supportive of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The food service establishments include:

  • Coffee Shops

  • Pizza Parlors

  • Donut Shops

  • Fast Food Restaurants

  • Delicatessens

  • Diners

  • Bars

  • Fine Dining Restaurants

The Type of Information That Doors Wide Open Includes:

When we created our Disabled Access List, our first goal was to make sure that disabled people have a constantly updated resource for New York City eateries of all types. However, we will do much more than list the name of each establishment. The food service establishments that earn a place on our site generally have fully accessible entries and exits, common use areas, and fully equipped restroom facilities. Many of the best known and most acclaimed restaurants in New York City are already compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, and those who are not yet compliant will be feeling more urgency to become compliant when the over 800,000 New York City disabled people take a stand and choose to patronize more Disable Access Facilities!

Not HandiCAPPED, But HandiCAPABLE!

The word “Handicapped” does not apply to disabled people today — the disabled people who use the listing site are “Handicapable”! This means that disabled people are vibrant, active people who refuse to let their disability hold them back from doing anything they want to do.

We at Doors Wide Open are fully in support of every handicapable person in New York City! We are very proud that we have been able to put together this guide because living in one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the United States — or even just visiting New York City — can be quite a daunting prospect when you are trying to find a place that will meet your requirements. There is no reason you ever have to dine at a place that doesn’t meet every single one of your needs ever again!

We will regularly update our Disabled Access Listing so that you have up to the minute information, and we always welcome hearing from our site visitors! Thank you for visiting Doors Wide Open.

What a wonderful idea! I am in a wheelchair and know how important it is to know if an eating place or any establishment is handicapped accessible. Thanks for such a website.

  2. This is such a great service you are offering. I thank you for your foresight Antoinette. You help others to become handicapable.
